BATH – Mike Fontaine belted a bases-loaded double in the second inning, driving in three runners and breaking the game wide open as Gayton cruised to a 14-2 victory over Smith-Tobey in the first round of the Zone III American Legion baseball tournament Saturday.
Fontaine’s double was responsible for three of the seven runs Gayton tallied in the second, opening up a 10-0 lead over No. 3 Smith-Tobey.
John Emerson, Mick Langlais, Fontaine and Brandon Gervais all had two hits for Gayton, while Zach Timmermeyer picked up the win on the hill. Gayton pitching combined to allow four hits and no earned runs.
Smith-Tobey was led by Justin Clark, who had a double.
Gayton meets Mechanic Falls in Zone III semifinal action, today at 4 p.m. in Lewiston.
Mechanic Falls 9, Andy Valley 5
TURNER – Mechanic Falls erupted for five runs in the eighth inning to defeat Andy Valley in a Zone III quarterfinal game.
The game was suspended Friday after six innngs with the scored knotted at 4-4.
With the game quickly enveloped by darkness Friday night, Andy Valley tied it in the sixth with a pair of runs. Levi Armandi singled home Dustin Gilbert and later scored the tying run on a passed ball.
Mechanic Falls took control by scoring five runs in the eighth inning, taking advantage of three errors. Brent Carey and Dave Lutz had RBI singles in the inning.
