MOUNT VERNON, Illinois (AP) – A race car ran off the track at a raceway in the Midwestern U.S. and crashed into the stands, killing two spectators and injuring six others, officials said.
Police said it was not immediately known what caused the car to leave the quarter-mile (half-kilometer) dirt oval track at Mount Vernon Raceway in Illinois on Saturday night. The driver was doing a qualification run and was the only vehicle on the track at the time.
Some of the victims had serious injuries, police said.
