BETHEL – Max Grover notched the game-winning goal from just outside the goal line with 6:36 to play as Monmouth started off the season with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Telstar.
The Mustangs also capitalized on an own goal by the Rebels defense earlier in the second half to tie the score. Louis Thornton opened the scoring in the first half off a corner kick for Telstar.
Mt. Abram 3, Wiscasset 1
WISCASSET – Charlie Dexter scored the second goal and eventual game-winner for the Roadrunners as Mt. Abram picked up a 3-1 triumph over Wiscasset in the season opener for both teams in boys’ soccer action Friday.
The Roadrunners, which controlled the ball with disciplined passing, took a 2-0 lead at the half. Donald Chretien scored an unassisted goal for the first tally of the game.
Goalie Zack Hartman saw more action than his counterpart, making 11 saves for the Redskins (0-1). Ethan Garceau scored the lone goal for Wiscasset in the loss.
Winslow 2, Oak Hill 1
WALES – Golf Penthong scored the game-winning goal as Winslow slipped past Oak Hill 2-1 in KVAC boys’ soccer action Friday.
Nate Lavoie got things started for the Raiders (0-1) with a game-opening goal in the first half. Oak Hill played extremely well, shuting out the Winslow offense until the final minutes of the contest.
The Black Raiders (1-0) tied up the game when Liam Fedus found the back of the net with three minutes remaining in regulation. Penthong then struck with just 48 seconds remaining to put Winslow up by a goal, and the defense held on for the victory.
Buckfield 4, Valley 0
BINGHAM – Rex Wilkenson notched three goals and assisted on the fourth to have a hand in each score during Buckfield’s 4-0 victory over Valley on Friday evening.
Wilkenson’s first two goals came in the first half, assisted by John Condon and Zach Cowett. Kyle Rines finished off the first-half scoring 52 seconds after Wilkenson’s second goal, redirecting a pass from Wilkenson and finding the back of the Valley net.
Justin Dodge stoned the Cavaliers in net for Buckfield (1-0), stopping all 16 shots. Travis Hovey also finished the game with 16 saves for Valley.
Mt. Blue 3, Nokomis 0
FARMINGTON – Three goals from Devin Ferreira were the difference as Mt. Blue ran past Nokomis 3-0 in KVAC play.
Ferreira got his head on a cross from Alex Lepage, putting the ball past Warrior keeper Wayne May in the first half.
Lepage added another assist on the second goal, and Cougar keeper Justin Davis made three saves as Mt. Blue outshot Nokomis 26-3.
Lewiston 3, Leavitt 0
TURNER – Husayn Carnegie broke open a scoreless game late in the first half, scoring a goal and setting up Jon Fournier’s score a minute later, as Lewiston defeated Leavitt 3-0 in the season opener for both teams.
Carnegie added another goal in the second half. Netminder Brian Nason turned aside 10 shots for the shutout. Kevin Mulherrin made 11 saves for the Hornets.
Dirigo 2, Hall-Dale 0
DIXFIELD – Jon Smith netted a pair of goals as Dirigo slipped past Hall-Dale, 2-0.
Gary Holman added an assist for the Cougars, and Lenny Hall kept the Bulldogs off the board with nine saves.
Paul Koenig made four saves for Hall-Dale.
Football
York 35, Poland 6
YORK – Chad Prugar rushed for 186 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns to power York past Poland, 35-6, in a Western Class B football season-opener.
York led 22-0 at the end of the first quarter, scoring three times in a span of less than four minutes.
Chris Knox threw a TD and rushed for another to lead the Wildcats.
Poland’s lone score was a 46-yard run by Tyler Merchant with 10:06 remaining in the first half. Merchant led the Knights with 61 yards on only three carries and caught two passes for a team-high 76 yards.
QB Joe Douglass rushed for 40 yards and was 8-for-16 through the air for 109 yards.
