Dear Sun Spots: Sept. 8 through Oct. 8 is Maine Literacy Month. During this time, the 14 Literacy Volunteers affiliates across the state are working hard to bring in the volunteers needed to help illiterate adults and families in their communities. The theme for this year’s effort is Teach, Mentor, Care.

The good news is that adults who need us are asking for help. The bad news is that some are waiting six months or more for a tutor because we are in dire need of volunteers.

Won’t you please help?

Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin has a large waiting list of individuals and families who need help with reading, writing, basic math and English conversation. If you are 21 years old or older, have a 12th grade reading level, flexibility, patience, and creativity, you can be an effective tutor. Volunteers are needed in all five of our program areas, including basic literacy, prison literacy, family literacy, English conversation, and English for speakers of other languages. Our next 12-hour tutor training workshop will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 15 and 22. If these dates don’t work for you, we train four times a year and can schedule you for another workshop. For more information please call 754-1772. – Tahlia Hope, Auburn.
