WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis withstood a furious Bates charge early in the second half to hold on for a 73-62 win and fourth consecutive Tip-Off championship in women’s basketball action Saturday.
The Judges (2-0) were paced by junior forward Caitlin Malcolm, who scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down eight boards.
USM 83, UMF 50
FARMINGTON – The Unviversity of Southern Maine topped host University of Maine at Farmington in the championship game of the 2005 Webber Energy Tip-Off Tournament, 83-50.
The top-ranked Huskies (2-0) held the Beavers to just five field goals through the first two quarters on their way to a 42-19 lead.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Shannon Kynoch led Southern Maine with 21 points and grabbed a career-high 14 boards, while Ashley Marble tallied 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Williams 100, Presque Isle 41
FARMINGTON – Williams knocked down 13 three-pointers, including nine in the opening half, as the Ephs pounded the University of Maine at Presque Isle 100-41 in the consolation game of the Webber Energy Tip-Off Tournament at the University of Maine at Farmington.
Four players finished in double figures for Williams (1-1), led by Mika Peterman, who dropped in 21, and Ellen Wilk with 16 points and five assists.
Husson 65, Newbury 64
WATERVILLE – Annie McIntosh hit two key free throws in the final minute of overtime as Husson edged Newbury 65-64 to advance to the championship of the Colby College Tip-Off Tournament.
Jodie Merchant scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Husson (1-0), and Jennie Rollins chipped in 16 points.
Newbury’s Randi Hardiman led all scorers with 28 points, including 11-of-12 shooting from the foul line, and added 10 boards, three steals, and three assists in the loss.
UNE 70 New England College 43
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – All-Tournament selection Sara Pelky and teammate Brooke Wilson each scored 13 points as UNE defeated New England College 70-43 in the championship game of the St. Joseph College Tip-Off Classic.
Tournament MVP Essie McKinnon netted 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Bowdoin 75, Endicott 23
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Julia Loonin dropped in 16 points as Bowdoin pounded Endicott 75-23 . Justine Pouravelis added 11 points, and Jill Anelauskas added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Polar Bears (1-0).
Sarah Voigt led Endicott with eight points and four rebounds.
Women’s hockey
Maine 4, RPI 1
ORONO – The University of Maine women’s hockey team remained undefeated with a 4-1 victory over RPI.
The Black Bears (6-0-1) were bolstered by sophomore Danielle Tangredi’s goal and three assists. Senior captain Cheryl White got the Bears on the board in the first period, and Vanessa Vani netted the eventual game-winner nine minutes later on the power play. Brigitte Laflamme also scored for Maine, and Kelly Law added a pair of assists.
Rachel Gettings turned aside 25 shots for Maine.
Bowdoin 6, Connecticut College 2
BRUNSWICK – Katie Fortney scored a pair of goals while Kristen Cameron and Meghan Gillis each added a goal and an assist to lead Bowdoin to a 6-2 win over Connecticut College.
Suzie Connor scored 23 seconds into the third period and Caitlin Sommer added a goal for the Camels (1-1).
Colby 2, Amherst 1
WATERVILLE – Nicole Crocker scored her first collegiate goal and the eventual game-winner as Colby edged Amherst 2-1.
Crocker scored at the 5:18 mark of the third period to give the Mules (1-1) a 2-0 lead.
Lindsay Harrington cut the lead in half for Amherst (0-2) one minute later.
