PITTSBURGH – Aaron Gray had 15 points a career-high 13 rebounds to lead Pittsburgh to a 62-49 win over Maine Saturday night.
It was the second double-double in three games since for Gray, who also had four blocks. The 7-foot junior had 17 points and 11 rebounds in his first career start against Saint Peter’s seven days prior.
Antonio Graves added 12 points and eight rebounds and Keith Benjamin 10 points off the bench for Pitt, which got off to a fast start and held on late in the game for the victory.
The Panthers (3-0) began the contest with leads of 13-3 and 27-7. The only time the Black Bears (1-3) led was at 3-2, but Maine out-scored Pitt 42-35 after its poor start.
The Black Bears cut the deficit to seven points six minutes into the second half and again with five minutes to play but could get no closer.
Ernest Turner had 15 points to lead Maine, which shot only 32 percent from the field. Jon Sheets added 14 points and Chris Bruff 11 rebounds for the Black Bears, who were playing their fourth game in nine days.
Bowdoin 100, UMPI 30
BRUNSWICK – Andrew Sargeantson recorded a game-high 20 points as Bowdoin rocketed to a 100-30 triumph over the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
The Polar Bears (3-1) demonstrated some fine shooting in the first half, making 25 of 39 shots for 64.1 percent. Bowdoin led 61-10 at the half.
The Owls (0-3) could only score three field goals and a pair of free throws in the first half.
Brett Miles led the Owls with nine points as the second half was a bit less intense.
Jordan Fliegel contributed a career-high 19 points, while hauling down a game-high eight rebounds for Bowdoin.
Men’s hockey
Colby 5, Nichols 4
BRUNSWICK – Arthur Fritch scored the game-winning goal off a pass from Adam Marino 10:47 into the third period to give Colby a 5-4 comeback victory over Nichols College.
Colby scored three unanswered goals in the third period. Greg Osborne had two goals and an assist, while Adam Marino and Josh Reber also scored a goal apiece for the Mules (3-0).
Eric Schottke led Nichols (3-1-1) with a goal and an assist.
Bowdoin 9, Salve Regina 0
BRUNSWICK – George Papachristopoulos was perfect in goal for Bowdoin as the Polar Bears peppered Salve Regina for a 9-0 victory in the Bowdoin-Colby Face-Off Classic on Saturday.
The Polar Bears (2-1) went 3-for-3 on power plays and scored two shorthanded goals. Greg McConnell and Mike Chute notched a pair of goals apiece, while the team tallied a 40-21 edge in shots.
Goalies Michael O’Brien (21 saves, six goals) and Chase Goodrich (19 saves, three goals) split time in net for the Seahawks (2-2-1). Bowdoin goalie Papachristopoulas stopped all 21 shots for his second shutout of the season.
