PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Torry Gajda’s two second-period goals led Providence College to a 4-2 victory over Maine and first place in the Hockey East conference Friday night.
Gadja stole the puck at center ice and went in on a breakaway to score at 5:11 to give the Friars (7-6-1, 7-2-1 Hockey East) a 2-1 lead, then scored again on a rebound at 14:41. Jamie Carroll scored on a power play at 2:32 of the third to put Providence at 4-1 over the Black Bears (9-5-0,4-4-0 Hockey East).
Maine outshot the Friars in the third period and trimmed the lead on a score by John Hopson.
Bowdoin 5, Skidmore 0
BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College executed a stifling defense to smother Skidmore College, 5-0, in men’s hockey action Friday.
The Polar Bears (4-0) allowed just nine shots on goal in the entire contest, and are ranked 11th in the latest national poll. Bowdoin peppered Skidmore in the first frame, out-shooting the Thoroughbreds (0-4) by a margin of 23-3 and scoring three times. Adam Dann scored the first and last goals of the contest for the Polar Bears.
Colby 7, Castleton 1
WATERVILLE – Joe Rothwell and Patrick Rutherford had a pair of goals each as Colby sailed to a 7-1 win over Castleton State in men’s hockey action Friday.
Mike Butler added one goal and one assist to the Mules’ (6-0) effort, while T.J. Kelley, Arthur Fritch and Josh Reber tallied two assists apiece. Ryan Chrenek and Todd O’Hara rounded out the scoring for Colby.
Middlebury 3, USM 1
MIDDLEBURY, Conn. – Evgeny Saidachev buried a shot from the slot for the eventual game-winner as Middlebury slid to a 3-1 win over the University of Southern Maine in men’s hockey action Friday.
The Panthers (5-0) took a 1-0 lead just 2:46 into the game when freshman Jamie McKenna drove hard to the goal and found the back of the net before colliding with the goaltender.

USM 3, St. Michael’s 0
GORHAM – Junior goalie Jen Arno stopped all 19 shots she faced to backstop the University of Southern Maine to a 3-0 victory over St. Michael’s College in an ECAC Women’s East ice hockey matchup Friday.
The Huskies (2-7) grabbed the lead at 3:39 of the first period when freshman Megan Irving collected her first collegiate goal from about 15 feet out in the slot. Sophomore Amy McNally and junior Kristin Pappolla picked up the assists.
Men’s basketball
Lyndon State 81, CMCC 58
AUBURN – Chris Dorsey drained an impressive 24 points to lead Lyndon State to an 81-58 win over Central Maine Community College in men’s basketball action Friday.
The Hornets (7-2) received fine offensive support from Tanner Pryce, who scored 21 points on eight field goals, including five from beyond the arc. Michael Barata contributed 13 points for Lyndon State.
Though the Mustangs (6-4) trailed for most of the contest, Kaleb Violette shined with a game-high 28 points, including four 3-pointers. Jon Gilson pitched in with eight points in the losing effort.
