BIDDEFORD – Freshman Todd Doyle poured in a game and career-high 23 points to lead Wentworth Institute of Technology to an 83-79 victory over the University of New England in men’s basketball action Saturday.
The game was close throughout, with Wentworth taking a 36-33 lead into halftime. Junior Nick Farynaz of Gray matched his career-high with 22 points for the Nor’easters (1-3). He converted 10 of 12 shots from the floor.
Sophomore Isaac Stickney of Rumford scored 14 points and grabed a game-high seven rebounds for the Nor’easters, while sophomore John Marriotthad 11 points and senior Matt McManus of Cumberland recorded 10 points.
Doyle was 8-for-13 from the floor, i ncluding 3-for-4 from beyond the arc for the Leopards (4-2) in the winning effort.
Norwich 91, Thomas 79
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Geoff Hensley and Rene Cheatham each scored 24 points to lead Norwich to a 91-79 win over Thomas College in the 9th Annual Ed Hockenbury Classic at Andrews Hall in men’s basketball action Saturday.
Dan Grappi matched the 24-point game-high for the Terriers (0-3), while teammate James Godley recorded 18 points. Aecio MAdeira and Chad Gray also chipped in with 12 and 11 pionts, respectively.
The Cadets (2-2) controlled the rebounding column as Cheatham hauled down a game-high 11 boards. Madeira topped Thomas with six rebounds.
Women’s basketball
Bowdoin 71, Rensseler 61
TROY, N.Y. – Julia Noonin topped a balanced attack by Bowdoin with 19 points as the Polar Bears shut the door on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in women’s basketball action Saturday.
The Polar Bears (4-1) were paced with outstanding double-figure scoring from Justine Pouravelis, Marisa Berne, Eileen Flaherty and Jill Anelauskas.
Bowdoin was in the drivers seat on defense as well. Alexa Kaubris hauled down 11 of the Polar Bear 54 rebounds.
Caitlyn Charest led the Engineers (2-2) with 12 points in the loss.
