WATERVILLE – Goalie Goerge Papachristopoulos made 13 saves in the third period to keep the Colby off the scoreboard in the final period and lead Bowdoin to a 3-2 win over the Mules in hockey action Friday evening.
Bryan Ciborowski put the Polar Bears (6-1) on the board 16 minutes into the first period on a conversion from Jon Landry, but the Mules (7-1) struck back quickly when Greg Osborne netted his first of two goals in the game, a little over one minute later.
Osborne found the back of the net again, just 34 seconds into the second period, to give Colby its only lead of the game. The Mules did not keep the lead very long, as Greg McConnell scored 1:20 later off an assist from Adam Dann.
The Polar Bears got the game-winning goal at 5:05 of the second period on a goal by Mike Chute.
Women’s hockey
Maine, Quinnipiac tie
NORTHFORD, Conn. – The University of Maine and Quinnipiac College battled to a 2-2 tie in women’s hockey action Friday.
Elyse Cole scored a short-handed goal for the Bobcats (6-9-4) midway through the first period, but the Black Bears (9-4-4) responded four minutes later when Amy Quirion converted a relay from Sonia Corriveau and Brigit Laflamme on a power play opportunity.
Quinnipiac took the lead again in the second period, but Maine knotted things up in the third period on an unassisted goal from Julie Poulin. Neither team could seal the deal in the late stages of regulation and an overtime frame as both squads tired.
Goalie Rachel Gettings had 36 saves for Maine, while Connie Craig turned back 22 shots for the Bocats.
UMass-Boston 7, Southern Maine 1
GORHAM – Junior forward Andrea Ciarletta tallied a pair of goals and two assists to lead the Univeristy of Massachusetts at Boston to a 7-1 win over the University of Southern Maine in an ECAC Women’s East hockey matchup Friday night.
Ciarletta scored the only goal of the first period at 12:53 to give the Beacons (4-3) an early lead that they would not relinquish. Sophomore Christina Lynch scored the eventual game-winner at 12:02 of the second period.
The Huskies (3-8) got on the board with a power-play goal at 10:59 of the third period to shorten the Beacon’s lead to 4-1. Senior Meaghan Barnaby got the goal with assists from sophomore Katie Quartuccio and senior Caitlin Cashman.
Junior goalie Jen Arno had 30 saves for the Huskies, while junior goalie Amanda Boucher earned the win for the Beacons by stopping 14 of the 15 shots she faced.
