Attention bargain hunters looking for high culture.
Before heading to Portland’s Merrill Auditorium for the Portland Ballet’s “Victorian Nutcracker,” consider seeing the show at Bates College’s Schaeffer Theatre.
Tickets for the Lewiston show are $20. They go up to $21.50 to $50 for the Portland show. The dancers are the same and the story is the same, the only difference is the venue. The Merrill Auditorium is a great venue. But the Schaeffer, more convenient to the Twin Cities and western Maine, brings its own charm without the hassle of the trip or the higher price tag.
A reviewer for the Sun Journal described the show as opulent and an impressive onstage spectacle. The production doesn’t exactly follow the traditional “Nutcracker” storyline, instead transferring the action and characters to a Victorian mansion.
