NORTH YARMOUTH – Josh Levasseur hit a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining to seal the win as Gray-New Gloucester survived a second-half rally by North Yarmouth Academy for a 49-45 victory in a boys’ basketball game Thursday.
The Panthers bounced back from a 21-point deficit at halftime behind an aggressive defensive effort, but the Patriots’ 7-for-7 shooting from the foul line helped to beat the full-court press.
Levasseur finished with 11 points, and teammate Tyler Blanchard chipped in with 11 more, including three shots from beyond the arc.
Pak Lul and Brian Chin paced North Yarmouth with 15 points apiece.
Winthrop 63, Georges Valley 46
THOMASTON – Tyler Smithgalle drained 13 points Thursday night to propel Winthrop to a 63-46 victory over Georges Valley in a MVC basketball matchup.
Nate Damm and Sam Leclerc chipped in for the Ramblers (2-0) with 12 points apiece.
Todd Cousins led Georges Valley (1-1) with a game-high 21 points, their only player to reach double digits. Georges Valley led a slim 11-9 advantage after the first quarter, then Winthrop went on a 19-7 run in the second and pulled away with a strong second half.
Hockey
Cape Elizabeth 3, Win-Dale 0
PORTLAND – Zack Juliano led a trio of players to register goals Thursday as Cape Elizabeth shut down Win-Dale 3-0 in hockey action.
Juliano also lent an assist to the effort, while Ryan Trembley and Tom Rich also tallied to complete the scoring.
Matt Bernstein made 11 saves in net to preserve the shutout.
Tavis Hasenfus handled netkeeping duties for Win-Dale, turning aside 39 shots fired in his direction.
Cape lit up the boards in each period in a steady offensive effort.
