GORHAM – Senior forward Megan Myles of Auburn and junior forward Ashley Marble combined to score 40 points to propel the University of Southern Maine to a 79-59 win over Ithaca College during the Maine Coast Classic in women’s basketball action.

Myles led four Huskies (10-1) in double-figures with a game-high 21 points. Marble, just one rebound shy of a double-double, netted 19 points and grabbed nine boards, including six offensive rebounds.

Ithaca junior guard Erin Sandvidge paced the Bombers (1-8) with 16 points, including a 4-for-5 effort from 3-point range.

Senior guard Donna Cowing added 12 points for the Huskies, while junior forward Shannon Kynoch came off the bench to toss in 12 points and grab six rebounds in the winning effort.

Suffolk 59, Colby 56

WORCESTER, Mass. – Gillian Brignac scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Suffolk to a 59-56 victory over Colby in the consolation game of the WPI Invitation.

Kerry Bowman added 11 points and seven rebounds for Sullfolk, which led 34-32 at halftime.

Kate Emery paced the Mules (4-5) with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Regina Wohl contributed nine points, six rebounds and five assists. Tracy Nale had 10 points.

Bowdoin 67, Husson 36

BRUNSWICK – Eleven players scored in a balanced attack as Bowdoin clawed its way to a 67-36 triumph over Husson in women’s basketball action.

The Polar Bears (9-1) led 40-21 at intermission and extended their lead to as many as 33 points in the second half. Marisa Berne was the lone Bowdoin player in double figures, scoring 11 points.

Carmen Ballard scored a game-high 24 points for the Eagles (3-7), including 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

Bowdoin outrebounded Husson 48-29 and held the Eagles to 26 percent shooting along with 30 forced turnovers.

Amherst 3, USM 2

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Amherst College advanced to the championship game of the Middlebury College Holiday Classic on Saturday with a 3-2 victory over Southern Maine.

The Huskies (1-6-1) held an 11-5 shot advantage, but was 0 for 5 on power-play opportunities during the scoreless first period. Southern Maine got on the scoreboard first when junior Mark Carragher put home a rebound from the slot at 4:39 of the second period.

The Jeffs (4-3-1) tied the game at 16:03 as freshman Jeff Landers had an open net after skating around the Southern Maine sophomore goaltender Ryan Sullivan, who had come out to cut off the angle in transition. The Jeffs took a 2-1 lead when senior Jack Greeley later scored on a rebound.

Despite outshooting the Jeffs 31-13 and going 2-for-12 on power play opportunites, the Huskies succumbed at the final buzzer as both teams simply traded goals in the third period.
