KEENE, N.H. – Ashley Marble poured in a game-high 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 80-56 victory over Keene State.
Megan Myles chipped in with 14 points and 10 boards for Southern Maine (14-1).
Bri Barnes led Keene State (8-7) with 17 points and three 3-pointers in the loss, while Jenn Kinney added nine points and seven rebounds.
Bowdoin 73, Tufts 56
MEDFORD, Mass. – Eileen Flaherty dropped in a game-high 24 points to power Bowdoin to a 73-56 win over Tufts.
Justine Pouravelis scored 16 points and added nine rebounds, four blocks and three steals for the Polar Bears (11-2).
Julia Verplank scored 14 points and Valerie Krah added 13 for Tufts (7-6).
Thomas 81, Wheelock 34
BOSTON, Mass. – Junior guard Kim Drosdik of Farmington scored 17 points and freshman guard Toby Martin of Wayne added 15 points to lead a balanced attack as Thomas College sped off to an 81-34 victory over Wheelock College.
The Terriers (6-6) added a little bite in their game, taking a 43-20 lead at the break. Drosdik and Martin were joined in double figures by sophomore forward Leah McNary with 11 points and junior forward Amanda Godley with 10 points.
Junior forward Samantha Cummings notched a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (0-10) in the losing effort.
Bates 61, Colby 37
LEWISTON – Meg Coffin scored 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting to lead the Bates College to its sixth straight win with a decisive 61-37 victory over Colby.
Coffin also pulled down eight rebounds, and Matia Kostakis chipped in with 16 points for the Bobcats (10-5). Bates held a comanding 32-15 lead at halftime.
Tracey Nale led Colby (5-8) with 13 points, while Lauren Duval scored eight points with six rebounds.
UMF 85, Mount Ida 40
NEWTON, Mass. – Junior Karen Sirois scored 11 points in a balanced attack as the University of Maine at Farmington cruised to an 85-40 triumph over Mount Ida College in women’s basketball action Saturday.
The Beavers jumped out to a 20-2 lead midway through the first half and finished 45-15 at intermission.
The Beavers led by as many as 48 points (72-24) in the second half, following a 3-pointer by sophomore Katelyn Ross with 9:57 remaining in the game.
Karie Simpson added 10 points to go with game-highs of six steals and four assists, while sophomore Erin Johnson added eight points and a game-best six rebounds off the bench for the Beavers.
Men’s basketball
Bates 66, Colby 55
WATERVILLE – Rob Stockwell had 21 points, 18 rebounds and three assists to lead the Bates College men’s basketball team to a 66-55 win over Colby.
The Bobcats went on a 16-6 run in the last 9:46 to turn a 49-48 lead into an 11-point victory.
Stockwell helped Bates to a 46-27 rebound advantage. Zak Ray added nine asissts and six points for Bates (11-2).
Freshman guard Mackenzie Simpson scored a game-high 22 points, while Mark Gaudet added 15 points and four assists for the Mules (6-9).
Bowdoin 84, Tufts 70
BRUNSWICK – Andrew Hippert scored 23 points, including five baskets from beyond the arc, to carry Bowdoin to a 84-70 victory over Tufts.
Andrew Sargeantson scored 12 points and had five steals for the Polar Bears (9-5). Hippert was also six-of-six from the charity stripe.
Tufts was led by Dan Martin, who drained a game-high 26 points and had 10 boards.
Keene State 103, USM 96
KEENE N.H. – David Sontag netted a game-high 23 points to go along with five assists and four steals to lead Keene State to a 103-96 triumph over Southern Maine.
Bill Harwick scored 22 points, including hitting all six attempts from the 3-point line. Walter Phillips also scored 22 points and had eight assists for the Huskies (9-6).
Mount Ida 85, UMF 76
NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida earned its first North Atlantic Conference victory of the season while handing the University of Maine at Farmington its first conference lost with an 85-76 triumph.
The Beavers led 33-27 following a 3-pointer by sophomore Matt St. John of Wayne with 2:33 remaining in the first half.
But the Mustangs went on a 10-2 run to give the hosts a 37-35 advantage at the break.
St. John connected on four treys for a 19-point afternoon, while senior Travis Magnusson tallied 16 points.
, six assists and four steals. Travis Carrier of Auburn notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Hockey
Williams 5, Colby 2
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams College scored three short-handed goals and one on the power play to overtake Colby 5-2 in men’s hockey action Saturday.
The Mules (10-4) answered the pair of opening goals by the Ephs (6-5-2) with a goal from Adam Marino with 14 seconds left in the first period.
Williams responded with two short-handed goals in the second period, before Patrick Rutherford made it 4-2 when he scored at the 11:22 mark for Colby.
The Ephs added an insurance goal from Dennis Kim on a power play late in the second period. Colby failed to get anything started in the scoreless third period.
Middlebury 9, Bowdoin 1
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The top-ranked Middlebury men’s hockey team stayed unbeaten with a 9-1 win over Bowdoin.
The Panthers (13-0-1) wasted no time as they took a 1-0 lead 32 seconds into the game on their first shot. Sam Driver made a quick pass to Jed McDonald in front of the net, who quickly tapped a shot past goalie George Papachristopoulos.
The Polar Bears (10-4-0) got on the board 24 seconds into the second period when Bryan Ciborowski scored with a shot through the five-hole on a breakaway to make it a 3-1 game.
Goalie Doug Raeder made 26 saves for the win, while Papachristopoulos and Nick Smith combined to make 27 saves for Bowdoin.
