NORTH HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) – A man used a garden hose to save his home when fallen trees delayed firefighters.

Dan Cheever climbed to the roof after lightning hit the home Wednesday night and put water on the flames until firefighters could get there. His fiancee, three children, three cats and two dogs got out okay.

Fire Lt. Brad Hutchings said Cheever kept the fire under control while firefighters took a longer route to the home. A large tree had fallen on the road nearby, ripping down wires.

The lightning started a fire that damaged the roof and attic.

Cheever was in the house on the first floor when he heard the lightning strike.

β€œIt physically moved the building,” he said.
