PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. (AP) – The Mount Washington Auto Road celebrates its 145th birthday today.
To celebrate, cars with old bumper stickers showing they are veterans of the climb to the summit of the 6,288-foot mountain will get free passage Tuesday up the road.
Work started on the road in 1854 but halted two years later when money ran out. In 1859, the Mount Washington Summit Road Co. was formed and work resumed. The road was finished in 1861.
Over the years, the numbers of cars making the climb has risen to more than 40,000.
