BRENTWOOD, N.H. (AP) – Authorities have dropped charges against a man they suspect tried to kill his girlfriend last February, saying the victim has suffered a medical setback and cannot cooperate with the prosecution for now.
Douglas Maroun, 36, originally was charged with attempted murder and falsifying evidence in the shooting of Charissa Maher in Windham. The attempted murder charge was dropped in March in a strategic move to avoid revealing some evidence prematurely, but the falsifying evidence charge remained.
Wednesday, County Attorney Jim Reams said the evidence charge also was being dropped, though the case will remain open as the victim recovers from a setback related to the shooting.
“While the case remains open, it is unfair to continue to have bail conditions on Mr. Maroun,” Reams said. Maroun was free on bail, but he was not allowed to travel out of state.
Police said Maroun shot Maher in the head at her home.
Initially, police were called to Maher’s condominium for a reported suicide attempt. Police said the 911 call was made by Nicholas Maroun, Douglas Maroun’s brother.
Douglas Maroun later was charged with firing the gun.
