FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) – Some Fairfield Beach residents are concerned about rowdy behavior now that Fairfield University has banned students from having kegs of beer on campus.
The new rule says students cannot have kegs, beer balls or any other container that holds more than 64 ounces of alcohol on campus.
In a letter to parents, Dean of Students Thomas Pellegrino said the ban will make the university safer and healthier.
But some residents of Fairfield Beach, an off-campus neighborhood where many students live, worry that the ban will push more parties into their neighborhood.
“We can’t have a keg on campus, so where are we going to have them, folks?” asked Paige Herman, a beach resident. “It’s disgraceful. This is not a step in the right direction.”
Chuck Abercrombie, a year-round beach resident, said the university has consistently said its students should be held to the same standards of conduct off campus as on campus.
“Why ban kegs at the university? Because they promote drunkenness, misbehavior and lawlessness. It’s no different at the beach,” Herman said.
Some students said the ban won’t prevent them from drinking because they’ll simply lug cases of canned beer to their parties instead of kegs.
“If kids are going to drink, they’re going to drink,” said Sean McGrath, 21, a senior from Sturbridge, Mass. “It just means buying more beer to make up for the lack of a keg.”
