NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) – A former town treasurer from Middlefield pleaded guilty Monday to stealing $77,000 from the town. Ann Savery, 47, was sentenced to 30 days in jail by Hampshire Superior Court Judge Daniel Ford after pleading guilty to two counts of larceny.

Savery was elected treasurer in the Hampshire County town of about 400 residents in 2000. She resigned in December 2004, before state police began investigating the loss of town money.

“She has indicated she was so ashamed about what she did that she contemplated suicide,” said Savery’s lawyer, Leonard Conway. Conway said his client repaid the $77,000 she stole.

Prosecutor Jayme Parent wanted Savery to serve three months in jail for violating the “position of trust” she was elected to.
