HOPKINTON, N.H. (AP) – A century-old covered bridge is undergoing repairs to help ensure its longevity.

The National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges is donating the repairs to the Contoocock covered railroad bridge because the state Division of Historical Resources doesn’t have funding to pay for maintenance. The bridge was built in 1889 for the Concord and Claremont branches of the Boston and Maine Railroad.

Workers are using a hydraulic system to lift the bridge so rotting timbers can be replaced and treated with preservative.

After the timbers are replaced, the bridge will get a new fire detection system and a fresh coat of paint, courtesy of a transportation grant.
