SPRINGFIELD, Vt. (AP) – It was dedicated only over the weekend, but a new town park already has become a favored spot for weddings.

The Comtu Cascades Park, which sits on about a quarter acre in downtown, was completed earlier in the summer and has hosted three weddings since then, said Mary Ellen Hawthorne, executive director of the downtown group Springfield On the move.

A dedication ceremony was held Saturday for the volunteers who raised the money for the park, which sits with a view of the Black River rapids.

It was built where a dilapidated building stood for about a century, blocking the view of the swiftly moving river from Main Street.

The original grist mill that served Springfield is adjacent to the new park and a number of hydroelectric stations that powered textile mills and other businesses in Springfield have been restored.

“This is the most positive addition to downtown Springfield in years,” said Paul Putnam, a former Springfield select board member. “The falls have been hidden for so long most people don’t know it’s here.”
