BOSTON (AP) A newborn baby boy found abandoned in Boston late Sunday morning is in critical condition at Children’s Hospital, according to a spokeswoman from the state Department of Social Services.

Boston police are trying to locate the mother, who may be in need of medical attention.

The baby boy was found in Roslindale just after 11 a.m. wrapped in a blanket with the placenta still attached, leading authorities to believe that the child was less than 24 hours old, police said.

The Department of Social Services has taken emergency custody of the child, dubbed Baby Jordan, so it can make medical decisions, then will go the court on Tuesday to get full custody, department spokeswoman Denise Monteiro said.

Police are asking the public to report anyone who was recently near the end of her pregnancy and now cannot account for a baby.

Massachusetts has a safe haven law, that allows parents to bring their newborns to a police station, fire station, or hospital without fear of prosecution.

Pregnant woman with questions can call 866-814-SAFE (7233) for more information.
