BEANS PURCHASE, N.H. (AP) – The Appalachian Mountain Club plans to restore one of its huts in the White Mountain National Forest to full service next summer. Club officials said summer visits to the Carter Notch hut have dropped by more than half since it became a self-service shelter in 1995. They hope restoring full service will help more hikers go hut-to-hut.
The Carter Notch hut is located near Wildcat and Carter mountains in an unincorporated township north of Jackson. The hut is on the Appalachian Trail near junctions with the Wildcat River and Nineteen-Mile Brook trails.
