CANTERBURY, N.H. (AP) – Charges have been dropped against a man arrested inside a neighbor’s home during the summer after a state psychiatrist found his mental problems make him incompetent to stand trial.

The state dropped burglary charges against Joseph St. Germain, 25, who was arrested in July when police found him hiding under a blanket on a couch in his neighbors’ home.

There was evidence that he had gotten into the home many times before the arrest. Neighbors Sarah and Matthew Fox told police that several times, items were moved or taken from their home. The night before the arrest, the couple came home to find clean laundry rearranged, an unmade bed made and water on their bathroom floor.

St. Germain was not found to be dangerous, but the family still is living on edge. They have changed the locks and taken other precautions, but Sarah Fox said she still worries.

“It would be nice to go bed one night and know that he’s not coming into our home,” she said. “He’s been out on bail since the night this occurred, so we never had the sense that he was safe and we were safe and he wasn’t coming back.”
