WASHINGTON, Conn. (AP) – A coyote that was beaten to death by a man cutting logs has tested positive for rabies, state Department of Environmental Protection officials said Thursday.
The coyote was suspected of attacking two other town residents before it was killed.
“We’re pretty sure it’s the same one,” said Cindy Brissett, Washington’s animal control officer.
Tim Cook was cutting wood shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday in the same area west of town where Tuesday’s attacks took place. Cook spied the lone animal approaching him, snapping at the air and growling.
Cook put down his chain saw, picked up a long-poled log roller, called a peavey, and hit the coyote until it stopped moving, officials said.
State Department of Environmental Protection officials can’t be certain it is the same coyote, but say it’s likely.
