LYNDONVILLE, Vt. (AP) – Two people were found shot to death behind the village municipal building Sunday by police responding to a report of shots fired, policce said.

The bodies of a 33-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were found on the ground near two vehicles, and a handgun was found nearby, according to Sgt. John Flannigan, a spokesman for the Vermont State Police.

The victims, whose names weren’t immediately released pending notification of next of kin, knew each other, according to Flannigan, who would not characterize the relationship further.

A pickup truck belonging to the man and a passenger car belonging to the woman were near the bodies, he said.

“We’re still investigating it but we’re confident there’s not an active shooter,” he said. He wouldn’t say whether police believe it was a murder-suicide.

Police were called about 3:50 p.m. by someone who reported hearing a rapid succession of shots, Flannigan said. A St. Johnsbury-based trooper who was in the vicinity at the time arrived at the scene about 30 seconds after the call, Flannigan said.

Lyndonville, which has a population of about 1,200, is located in northeastern Vermont, near the Canadian border.
