BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) – An assistant manager of a Goodwill store who allegedly embezzled money will avoid jail time after entering a diversion program for first-time offenders, authorities said.
Roseina N. Dean, 37, of North Pownal, was charged with a single count of felony embezzlement last month after failing to deposit $815 in store money at a bank. If convicted, she could have faced 10 years in prison.
On Oct. 26, store manager Dan Frank called police to say he had caught an employee stealing money. The thefts came to light when Trustco Bank notified Goodwill that an unknown number of daily deposits the store said had been made never actually occurred.
When asked about the missing money, Dean admitted to taking $815 for her personal use, saying she had intended to pay it back, according to a police affidavit. She has since repaid it, according to Frank.
Goodwill, a not-for-profit organization, provides employment training and sells clothes and other goods donated to its stores.
