PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) – Some residents say the Port of New Hampshire makes it tough for them to sleep, and they want some relief. City Manager John Bohenko says the problem is the ’round-the-clock work on loading and unloading road salt from the downtown piers.
He suggested the port restrict operation to 6 a.m.-11 p.m. and asked if the beeping backup alarms could be turned off or adjusted at the port. Port officials said limiting hours would limit the number of trips truckers could make, and cut their pay. They also said turning off the alarms would leave the port unable to get insurance coverage. Further, they said any change in the hours would have to go through the Legislature.
The Pease Development Authority, which oversees the port, is likely to vote on the suggestions next month.
