BOSTON (AP) – The Coast Guard was searching Thursday for a 52-foot fishing vessel with two crew members on board after detecting a distress signal from the boat, Chief Scott Carr said.
The Lady Luck out of Newburyport was last reported about 12 miles off the coast of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Carr said.
The Coast Guard deployed a Falcon jet and a helicopter to the scene and three cutters were on the way, he said. The helicopter has detected a debris field and oil sheen in the area of the Lady Luck’s last known location.
The Canadian Coast Guard and other fishing vessels in the area were assisting in the search, Carr said. The search began Thursday morning and was expected to continue at least until this morning.
The wind Thursday morning was just over 10 miles per hour, with 4-foot seas. The water temperature was 40 degrees.
The missing crew members were identified as Sean Cone, 24, of North Andover, the vessel’s master; and crewman Dan Miller, 21, of North Hampton, N.H.
Lady Luck was docked in Portland on Wednesday night and its destination was Gloucester, Petty Officer Etta Smith said.
The New Bedford-based fishing vessel Lady of Grace sank in Nantucket Sound less than a week ago. One crew member’s body has been recovered, while the other three remain missing and presumed dead.
