WINDHAM, Conn. (AP) – A beloved crossing guard died in a fire that heavily damaged a two-story house Wednesday night, fire officials said.
Paul Garabedian, 72, was the crossing guard at St. Mary-St. Joseph School, where students were mourning his death Thursday. He was remembered for being an usher at St. Joseph Church and a man who, with his wife, rang a bell and collected money for the Salvation Army each Christmas.
“He was very, very generous with (his) time, treasure and talent,” said Sister Elaine Moorcroft, principal of the school.
“If he doesn’t go to heaven, I don’t have a chance.”
Several firefighters were injured fighting the blaze in the home on Oxbow Drive. Crews from several departments responded just after 8 p.m.
Fire officials said Garabedian’s body was found near the doorway on the first floor. His wife was not home.
South Windham Fire Chief John Chapman said four firefighters were taken to Windham Community Memorial Hospital.
Windham Fire Marshal Michael Licata said one firefighter was transferred to the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital for treatment of burns on his hands and face.
