AMHERST, N.H. (AP) – The seventh-grader who collapsed and died on a field trip this week died of natural causes, the state medical examiner says. But determining the exact cause of McKayla Geisinger’s death will take a few weeks.
The 13-year-old from Mont Vernon died Monday night after returning from a two-mile snowshoe hike at the base of Mount Washington. She and classmates from Amherst Middle School were attending a school program at the Appalachian Mountain Club lodge at Pinkham Notch.
Dr. Thomas Andrew, the state medical examiner, said Wednesday an autopsy did not point to anything other than natural causes.
He said tests to pinpoint the cause will take several weeks.
Counselors were at Amherst Middle School and at her previous school, the Mont Vernon Village School.
