WEST DANVILLE, Vt. (AP) – At Joe’s Pond, the cinder block’s on ice.
Twenty years after it started as a guessing game, the 2007 version of the Joe’s Pond Ice Out got under way Tuesday. Ray Richer, water quality officer for the Joe’s Pond Association, placed the 65-pound block on the frozen pond just after 2:30 p.m.
For $1, you can guess the date and time it falls through the ice. Whoever guesses closest to the date and time when it does wins half the proceeds from ticket sales. The other half goes to the association.
Last year, the ice went out on April 16 at 3:20 p.m.
