PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) – A spokeswoman says Gov. Joe Manchin has received an apology from the company that misspelled the state’s name on T-shirts commemorating West Virginia University’s National Invitation Tournament title.

“The governor realizes it was an honest mistake and after they realized the mistake, the company apologized,” spokeswoman Lara Ramsburg said.

The “West Virginia” printed on the shirts players wore after winning the NIT on Thursday night was missing the last “i” in “Virginia.”

Hamden, Conn.-based 6th Man Sportswear made the shirts. A call to the company was not immediately returned Saturday, but 6th Man did place an explanation of the miscue on its Web site. In short, 6th Man said no one noticed the mistake.

At least, no one noticed until WVU players donned the shirts after winning the school’s first NIT title in 65 years with the 78-73 win over Clemson.

The company assured customers that any shirts they order would be spelled correctly.
