HEBRON, Conn. (AP) – The mystery of three stolen wooden statues carved by a chain saw artist has been partially solved.State police said a local resident found the carvings Saturday in a wooded area off Papermill Road about 2 miles from artist Roman Jandzinski’s home. But the thieves remain at large.

The statues include a 6-foot-tall wizard modeled after Gandalf from Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” and two others based on Polish fairy tale characters. They each weigh several hundred pounds, so police believe there was more than one thief.

The only damage reported was the right hand of one of the two fairy tale characters being broken off, but Jandzinski believes he can glue it back on.

The statues were stolen on the night of March 24 by thieves who managed to haul them over a stone wall at Jandzinski’s home without waking anyone.

The name of the person who discovered the statues was not released. Jandzinski said police told him the carvings apparently were tossed beside the road Friday night.

Police helped Jandzinski and his brother bring the statues back to his home on Chittendon Road Saturday afternoon. He lined them up along his driveway.

Jandzinski, 44, said he was happy to have his “friends” back. “It’s just a piece of wood, but you get attached to it,” Jandzinski said.

State police are asking people with information about the heist to call Trooper Joshua Chivers at 860-537-7500.
