LEMPSTER, N.H. (AP) – A mountain of discarded tires has been removed, months ahead of the latest schedule.

Tires began being piling up on the five-acre site off Route 10 in the mid-1980s, and the mountain eventually grew to nearly 140,000 tires. The state got involved after a fire in 1996.

Two previous owners did not follow state and local orders to get rid of the tires, but a third, James Bonia of Middleton, bought the property last November and immediately began clearing it.

The town gave him until September of this year to clear the site, but selectmen who inspected the site last week said the tires are gone, months ahead of schedule.

Seventy-two trailer-truck loads of tires were taken to a recycler in Massachusetts.
