WINDHAM, N.H. (AP) – Prosecutors dropped charges against a Salem man who shot his stepbrother in the chest last month, concluding that he was trying to defend himself.

Frank Meisel, 43, had been charged with assault.

He wounded his stepbrother, David Richardson, 53, on March 1 after Richardson went to Meisel’s business, Windham Autobody, swung a large bat at his head and threatened to hurt him, said Rockingham County Attorney James Reams.

“Everything we had was consistent with self-defense,” Reams said.
