PLAINFIELD, N.H. (AP) – An elderly Plainfield couple were injured when an explosion lifted their house off its foundation and blew out all the windows.
Gardiner and Kay MacLeay were hospitalized after the blast, which happened around noon Monday in the village of Meriden.
Authorities said they hadn’t determined what caused the blast, but a neighbor said it may have started with a power outage. Gretchen Taylor said without power for its cooling fans, an old wood furnace in the home’s basement sparked a fire in the water boiler, which exploded, collapsing the interior walls into the basement.
“I think it’s a total loss,” she said.
