PLYMOUTH, N.H. (AP) -Prosecutors said Monday it may take weeks to determine possible new charges against a Plymouth State University student accused of assaulting another student, who died during the weekend of his injuries.

Benjamin Grew, 19, of Yarmouth, Mass., was charged last week with second-degree assault for allegedly beating senior Jared Barrows, 23, of Marshfield, Mass. Barrows, died Friday night or early Saturday from severe head injuries he sustained in the April 15 beating, authorities say.

Senior Assistant Attorney General Jeffery Strelzin, who is working with county prosecutors, said Monday homicide charges are among those being considered, but nothing was definite.

Barrows was hospitalized after a fight in the vicinity of Russell Street, which is near the university and home to many off-campus student apartments. The assault occurred at about 3:30 a.m. on April 15, according to police.

Police believe the assault was “not a random act” and that Barrows and Grew were “familiar or associated with each other.” But authorities have not commented on a possible motive or how the two knew each other.

Strelzin has not said whether drugs, alcohol or weapons were involved, but said there were witnesses.

Grew was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Barrows, who was to graduate on May 19, died at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. An autopsy Saturday identified trauma to the head as the cause of death.

He lived on campus and was an arts major concentrating on graphic arts. University spokesman Chris Williams said a memorial service was being planned.

“This is just a tragic event,” Williams said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.”
