MILFORD, Conn. (AP) – A Milford man was scheduled to be arraigned in state court today on charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving after allegedly leading state police on a 43-minute highway chase that reached up to 100 mph.

State police said the chase began at about 11 a.m. Saturday when Michael Tanych, 36, ignored a trooper’s order to pull over on Interstate 95 in Milford.

Tanych sped to New Haven and led troopers up I-91 and I-691 before crashing on I-84 in Southington near Exit 30, state police said. Tanych struck a guardrail and bottomed out in the median during an attempt to make a U-turn on I-84 and double back in the opposite direction, authorities said.

The 60-mile chase began after another driver called 911 to report that a motorist was apparently assaulting someone in the back seat. The driver gave a description of Tanych’s car, and a trooper tried to pull him over, police said.

Tanych turned out to be the only person in his car, police said. No other vehicles on the highways were affected by the chase, troopers said.

Tanych was being held on $20,000 bond pending arraignment Monday in Milford Superior Court. He was also charged with engaging a police pursuit and interfering with police.
