TROY, N.H. (AP) – A cell phone and police sirens helped authorities locate a teen who got lost while hiking alone on Friday evening.

Fish and Game Department Conservation Officer Todd Szewczyk said 18-year-old Jason Hart, of Troy, got lost about a mile into a two-mile hike up Gap Mountain. With no flashlight, compass, water or jacket, Hart relied on his cell phone to call for help.

Police were able to track Hart’s location through the phone’s Global Positioning System, then ran their sirens so he could hear them. Fish and Game officers then hiked in to retrieve Hart. They found him around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Hart was cold but not hypothermic. Officers brought him back to his car and he went home.

Fish and Game authorities say although a cell phone came in handy this time, it’s not wise to rely on just that in case of an emergency.
