BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – The Vermont Attorney General’s office will not pursue hazing charges against a University of Vermont fraternity.
In January the office, working on behalf of UVM, said it intended to appeal a ruling by a Vermont Judicial Bureau judge, who dismissed hazing charges against four members of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
Vermont Judicial Bureau Judge Charon True said police hadn’t proved the allegations.
The Judicial Bureau handles traffic violations and other civil complaints, including hazing violations.
UVM police wrote tickets accusing fraternity members of making prospective members wear cowboy outfits while they were taunted with homophobic language at a March 2006 party based on the movie “Brokeback Mountain.”
John Treadwell, assistant attorney general, said although evidence shows that hazing did occur, the office will not pursue an appeal.
UVM has suspended the fraternity from December until August for underage drinking and hazing violations, UVM officials said.
