MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. (AP) – A 22-year-old Southington man died Monday night after falling from a steep rock ledge while hiking on a trail with two other people, police said Tuesday.

Christopher W. Koenig was pronounced dead at the scene around 6 p.m. Monday, about 15 minutes after friends called on a cell phone to report that he had fallen from the trail atop Mt. Higby, police said.

Koenig apparently lost his footing and fell more than 200 feet down a steep rock ledge, fire and police officials said. No foul play is suspected, but the incident remained under investigation Tuesday.

It was the second death there in less than a year.

In August 2006, a 17-year-old Madison girl died of her injuries after falling from the cliff, where dozens of recruits from the nearby State Police Training Academy formed a human chain to reach her.
