CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) – A teenage boy was injured Thursday afternoon when a homemade bomb he and another boy where handling went off, police said.

The device was a metal cylinder packed with gunpowder, Cromwell Police Chief Anthony Salvatore said.

“They put a short fuse on it, they lit it and unfortunately, it blew off in the lad’s hand,” Salvatore said.

Police said the boy may have lost some fingers. He was taken to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. His identity and condition have not been released.

The Hartford bomb squad was called in to assist.
