FARMINGTON – The Mt. Blue High School Jazz Band and the Mt. Blue High School Syncopations will join together to present a spring concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 31, on the University of Maine at Farmington campus.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in Nordica Auditorium. Admission is free.
In its fifth year, the Syncopations is an auditioned vocal women’s ensemble of 12 singers directed by Carol Shumway and accompanied by Patricia Hayden. The group participated in the 2004 National Women’s Honor Choir at Carnegie Hall, N.Y. Last year, the singers traveled to London for a concert tour. They have produced two Christmas concert CDs.
Included in the May 31 concert will be vocal arrangements of music from the ’50s big band era, Newfoundland folk songs, show tunes, and classical concert selections.
In its fourth year, the Mt. Blue High School Jazz Band, also an auditioned ensemble, is directed by Karen Beacham. In 2005, the band traveled to Quebec to participate in workshops and perform for schools. The jazz band hosts the annual fall dance with the Al Corey Big Band and dance instruction by Gary Smith. The band continues to perform for community events and periodically in Meeting House Park.
