BRUNSWICK – The public is invited to read Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel “The Blithedale Romance,” then attend a book lecture by Bowdoin College Associate Professor of English Peter Coviello at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, in the Visual Arts Center, Kresge Auditorium.

“Hawthorne’s novel is, in a sense, a book about freedom and terror,” said Coviello. “Published in 1852, it tells the cautionary tale of several New Englanders who take part in the effort to build a Utopian agrarian community outside of Boston. More intimately, it tells the story of its narrator, Miles Coverdale, and of his simultaneous attraction to the range of new freedoms available at Blithedale – erotic freedoms, not the least of these – and his horror in the face of that very attraction.”

Coviello’s presentation is the third event in the Bowdoin Book Lecture Series.

“This program invites all members of the community to read a good book and hear an excellent Bowdoin College professor lecture on it,” said Barbara Reinertsen, a member of the Association of Bowdoin Friends steering committee.

Admission is free. For more information, call 725-3253.
