SAINT-PATRICE-DE-BEAURIVAGE, Que. (AP) – A bus filled with middle school students from a Rhode Island private school veered into a ditch south of Quebec City, and 14 of those on board suffered minor injuries, police said.

Young Un, head of the middle school at The Wheeler School in Providence, R.I., said the bus ran off the road Sunday evening near Saint-Patrice-de-Beaurivage and toppled onto its side. A chaperone suffered the worst injury – a broken collarbone – and remained in a Canadian hospital.

Most of the seventh- and eighth-graders just had scrapes or bruises and 12 students and two chaperones spent the night in the hospital, mostly as a precaution, Un said.

“They bounce back really quickly,” Un said of the students. “They are resilient and their spirits are high.”

All of the students are expected back in Providence this evening, where counselors will be available.

Ann Mathieu, a provincial police spokeswoman, said 39 students and five chaperones were on the bus when the driver apparently lost control in a heavy storm.

“It was very, very rainy at that place yesterday,” Mathieu said.

The group was returning to Quebec City from a day trip to watch maple syrup being made. The bus also had a Massachusetts license plate, Mathieu said.
