SOMERS, Conn. (AP) – A sudden burst of wind, on an otherwise calm day Memorial Day, threw a scare into some folks and horses.

The wind gust tore part of a metal roof off a horse barn around 1 p.m. Monday at the Shallowbrook Equestrian and Polo Center. No one was injured and the horses were unharmed.

“It was like an explosion,” said Joe Vita, whose family owns the farm.

But exactly what happened was a mystery. There was little warning and the damaging wind had meteorologists scratching their head.

“None of the meteorological signs point to anything,” WTNH-TV meteorologist Geoff Fox said.

The National Weather Service is investigating whether it was a tornado or some other type of wind event.
