CARTHAGE – New England Celtic Arts will present the Don Roy Trio at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at The Skye Theater. A preshow fiddle jam will start at 6:30 p.m.
The Don Roy Trio has long entertained audiences in southern Maine and beyond.
A champion fiddler with depth in many styles of fiddling, Roy’s musical passion lies with the French-Canadian tradition followed closely by Celtic music. He received fellowship awards for excellence in traditional music from the state of Maine in 1994 and in 2001. Roy’s CD “Thanks for the Lift” earned a nomination for the National Heritage Award.
Roy is well known for her step-dancing, piano accompaniment. Augmented by her rhythmic feet, she adds life and enthusiasm to the music. Some of Don’s and Cindy’s families were getting together for house parties long before the two met on a blind date.
Jay Young plays upright bass with the group. He has accompanied Don and Cindy for many years in a variety of bands, including The Maine French Fiddlers.
The Don Roy Trio has performed at the Library of Congress and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Merkin Concert Hall, The Barns at Wolf Trap, and the Celtic Colours International Festival. The group has made two appearances with Garrison Keillor.
Skye Theater is at 2 Highland Drive off Winter Hill Road and U.S. Route 2. Tickets are $10 at the door. Call New England Celtic Arts at 562-4445 for reservations and directions.
