LEWISTON – The Happily Ever After Radio Theater H.E.A.R.T. Live Project will present Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling” free June 22-23 at the Lewiston Public Library.

Performances revive the old radio theater art form, such as the radio classics “The Shadow,” “The Lone Ranger” and “War of the Worlds.”

No costumes or sets are used. Rather, a group of professional artists share a story by way of character voices, sound effects and music.

“The Ugly Duckling” has been adapted for “audio theater” by writer Paul Baribault and is directed by professional actor Dennis St. Pierre, both of Lewiston.

Happily Ever After Radio Theater is presenting this family-friendly production as a means of introducing the Lewiston-Auburn community to its mission – to help children visualize and develop literary, creative and social skills.

“This alternative media is to provide all families an avenue to interact as a family. We are looking to provide parents an alternative to screen media when searching out for other entertainment,” Dennis St. Pierre, who created Happily Ever After Productions with Sine St. Pierre in 2004, said in a prepared statement.

“It is our goal to reconnect families to classic literature and storytelling,” he said. “Ultimately, we envision children’s radio programming, (similar to PBS’s television programming) with the potential for student-produced radio shows and involvement within the schools via free access Web streaming.”

The show at the library will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, June 22; and at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 23.
