BOSTON (AP) – Evening talk show host Paul Sullivan is stepping down from his job at WBZ Radio, saying his two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer has made it impossible to continue.
Sullivan has had four brain surgeries and hasn’t been on the air in the seven weeks since his latest surgery.
In a letter to the station, Sullivan said he doesn’t think he will ever have the energy to return to the four-hour evening slot. He said continuing would be unfair to the station, as well as his family and friends.
“This decision is not based on any one medical fact or the latest update of my condition,” he said. “The fact is that WBZ deserves the best team on the field and as of this moment with my condition I would not be the best teammate to take the field.”
Sullivan plans a final show this week, and said he hopes to contribute commentaries or write for the station’s Web site.
Sullivan began as a talk show host at WBZ in 1999, and he later took over the evening slot of David Brudnoy, who died of cancer in 2004.
