WILLISTON, Vt. (AP) – A decade-old box of M-80 firecrackers exploded and killed a man using a cutting torch to open an abandoned safe, police said.

Anthony Boisvert, 20, of Colchester, died in the blast Tuesday afternoon while he worked in a service bay at Demag Construction.

Police said no one knew the contents of the abandoned safe, and that a spark from the torch apparently set off the fireworks. Police described them as M-80 fireworks.

The blast was powerful enough to blow the service bay door off its hinges; a witness said she felt it hundreds of feet away.
